Mera System
Overview
Hooke Bio’s Mera has the ability to culture, drug and stain 3D microtissues at higher throughput than existing technologies while analysing physiological metrics relevant to drug functionality and toxicity in real time through a fully automated integrated fluorescent microscope.
Benchmarking Mera Against Traditional 3D Culture Systems
Mera sets a new standard in 3D cell culture. To highlight its versatility and performance, a variety of microtissues and spheroids have been cultured on Mera and compared to those grown in conventional microplates within standard incubators. Unlike traditional platforms, Mera is cell-agnostic—designed to support any cell type with ease.
Using our integrated fluorescence imaging system, microtissues are stained directly within Mera using Calcein AM (green, indicating high viability) and EthD-1 (red, indicating apoptosis), enabling real-time viability assessments without manual intervention. But Mera goes beyond viability. Its advanced recirculating fluidics promote inter-microtissue communication, simulating the dynamic flow and signaling found in the human body—bringing in vitro systems closer to in vivo conditions than ever before.
Precision Analytics, Proven Results
Mera’s custom-built image analysis software enables consistent, reproducible measurement of physiological responses in 3D microtissues. Toxicity testing on the system shows that drug-induced cell death closely mirrors results from traditional microplate cultures—but with a crucial advantage: Mera’s fluidic environment more accurately replicates human physiological conditions, delivering data with greater translational relevance.

Currently only 1 in 10 drugs make it through clinical trials to market due mostly to poor preclinical models. Based on recent literature, 3D microtissues which are also known as organoids/spheroids, give more physiological responses than 2D models and may be suitable replacement for animal models in preclinical drug testing.

Bioconsumable plate
Speak to our teamOVERVIEW
The Hooke Bio System is an advanced, two-part solution comprising the Bioconsumable Plate and the Mera Platform. Together, they offer a powerful and scalable microtissue handling system capable of feeding, washing, drugging, and staining up to 640 microtissues simultaneously.
With Mera’s fluidic recirculation, the system replicates human physiological conditions, while integrated optics enables real-time, non-invasive assessment of live microtissue metrics — bringing precision and efficiency to every stage of your workflow.
